4 Tips from XTERRA Coach Jenny Smith
We all get older, and as we do our training needs to age with us.

“Aging happens to all of us, so it’s important for older athletes to learn, adapt, and embrace it,” explains Jenny Smith, an XTERRA Certified Coach and long-time XTERRA elite racer.

Smith’s top four tips for older athletes:

  1. Check in and make sure your goals are current and relevant. You will stay motivated and engaged when your goals are meaningful to you and wherever you are at right now.
  2. Have your training and racing fit in with and be in support of your lifestyle. A key to being a happy athlete is to have your training enhance your work, family, and everyday life.
  3. Focus on quality over quantity. Keep high intensity quality interval training as part of your routine.
  4. Support your training with mobility, strength, and recovery. 

“We need to be strong enough to do the hard work and we want to recover from and down regulate between hard sessions,” says Smith. “Training as and for older athletes is a fascinating topic, and there are a lot of resources but ultimately it comes down to this - Do the work, stay positive, and have fun.”
