XTERRA Trentino Dolomiti Paganella Wins Event of the Year

by XTERRA on 04/02/2022

The inaugural XTERRA Trentino Dolomiti Paganella off-road triathlon was named the 2021 Event of the Year at the Europe Triathlon Presidents’ Conference Gala Dinner in La Nucia, Spain on March 12, 2022.
The accolades come just one-month after Trentino, Italy was awarded host site honors for the upcoming XTERRA World Championships on October 1, 2022.
"This honor confirms Trentino as a land of great events, and is a tribute to the fine teamwork between the Dolomiti Paganella Tourism Agency, the XTERRA organizing committee, and our partnership with the Italian Triathlon Federation who have positioned this territory as the ideal destination for outdoor endurance since 2020,” said Maurizio Rossini, CEO of Trentino Marketing. “We are thrilled with this award, and excited to host the first XTERRA World Championship to be held in Europe this October. The worldwide visibility enjoyed by the final will allow Trentino to further showcase its beautiful nature and sporty terrain to outdoor lovers across the globe."

The local organizing committee, led by Massimo Massaccesi and Matilde Landriscine from XTERRA Italy, Luca d’Angelo and Michele Viola from Dolomiti Paganella, and Nico Lebrun and Kostas Koumargialis of XTERRA Europe, were on-site at the Europe Triathlon Awards “Evening of Peace” gathering in support of the people of Ukraine.

“Hosting XTERRA and the Europe Triathlon Championship races last year was a unique and stimulating experience, and really a magnificent growth opportunity for our entire community,” said Michele Viola, President of the Dolomiti Paganella Tourism Agency. “To receive this prestigious recognition, it gives us immense pride to know we were able to meet the challenge, and also boosts our confidence as we work towards hosting the XTERRA World Championships here in Molveno this October."

Last year’s Trentino Dolomiti Paganella events, held in partnership with Europe Triathlon, doubled as the Europe Cross Duathlon and Triathlon Championships. The venue and organization were widely praised by participants, who lauded its natural beauty, charming culture and cuisine, and the challenging course itself.

“It’s a very special place, and the local organizing committee took great pride and passion in their work to ensure a world-class experience for competitors,” said Nico Lebrun, the 2005 XTERRA World Champion and current technical director of XTERRA.  “We are excited to bring our XTERRA Family from across the globe to Trentino this October to explore one of the world’s most magical destinations and then have a great big party afterwards.”
This year’s XTERRA World Championships in Molveno will mark the first-time in history that off-road triathlon’s greatest day will take place outside of Maui, part of a global initiative to rotate the sports’ major championship event venues.

"We are grateful and honored to receive this award,” added Kostas Koumargialis, XTERRA Europe Marketing Director. “It acknowledges the hard work of the local organizing committee and everyone who contributed to the success of the event despite the difficulties in navigating travel and operational restrictions caused by the pandemic. We look forward to joining forces with this incredible crew once more to create an amazing XTERRA World Championship in October."
